Everyone’s Artificial Deadline – Dec 18, 2020

Many of us are aiming to close out all 2020 work items by tomorrow, December 18th. I think December 18th is the unofficial date to check out of 2020 mentally. I have less than 24 hours to meet this ambitious deadline and a whiteboard full of todos. The HBCUvc staff will officially be on break from December 21st – January 1st, returning to the “office” on January 4th.

In my mind, I have glorious plans of closing the laptop/email permanently until 2021 and spending time cleaning the house, cooking delicious meals, and baking cookies with the kids. I may even pick up running again, and I need two good books to read — maybe one fiction and one non-fiction. Yes, this is the break I want to imagine.

But really, I have a handful of open threads with potential funders who want to close before the end of the year, and it’s unlikely to be resolved by tomorrow. The pessimist in me thinks this break may look like — me carefully keeping an eye on email, binge-watching a few tv shows, and more takeout than I would like to admit. But I may still do the running.
